Sergiev Posad
Russian Vatican

Sergiev Posad directions
Sergiev Posad town is located in 62 km from Moscow. This town is often called Russian Vatican. In XIV century, Saint Sergius Radonezhsky founded one of the biggest and most famous Russian Monasteries - the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius. In the central Trinity Cathedral, the founder is buried. The most famous Andrew Rublev's icon - "The Trinity" was created specially for this cathedral.

The History and Art Museum-Reserve in Sergiev Posad is a major treasury of Russian art. The main peculiarity of the Museum is its location within the walls of the ancient Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery (Lavra), founded in the first half of the 1340s by the son of Rostov Boyar Sergius of Radonezh which later became one of the richest Russian monasteries. The world-famous architectural ensemble of the Monastery includes more than fifty edifices constructed by Moscow, Pskov, Yaroslavl craftsmen. It is an inseparable part of the Museum complex. In 1993 it was inscribed on the UNESCO List of the World Cultural Heritage.

The Museum was founded in 1920 on the basis of the artistic treasures of the Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra. It helped the unique collections to survive through the troubled time and saved them. The basic collections were composed of artistic treasures concentrated in the course of many centuries in the Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery: the treasures were donated by Grand and Appanage Princes, Tsars, Boyars, clergymen and ordinary people or made in the Monastery workshops. So, a rich and extremely varied collection of Old Russian painting and applied art of the 14th - 17th century was accumulated. The Monastery documents composed in the 17th century have come down to us. The Inventory Book of 1641 and Donation Books of 1639 and 1673 give valuable information about the works of art and their creators. Later the Local History Museum (1929) and the Museum of Folk Handicrafts Museum (1941) supplemented the basic collection.

Now the Museum collection comprises more than 120.000 items: ancient icons, medieval manuscripts and old printed books, icon and ornamental embroideries, church utensils, articles of gold and silver, paintings, engravings, folk and contemporary art. This ancient art collection attracts great attention due to its close connection with important events of Russian History like Kulikovo Battle of 1380, struggle for independence against the Polish-Lithuanian invasion and events of Peter the Great's time.
