This exhibition at the Museum of Russian Impressionism provides insight into the phenomenon of collecting in the USSR, in times when private property was abolished and some artists were persecuted because of their political views and works.

Despite the threat of confiscation and arrest, Soviet collectors continued to amass masterpieces by iconic artists of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries: Konstantin Korovin, Kazimir Malevich, Niko Pirosmani, Marc Chagall, Boris Kustodiev, Alexandr Golovin, Konstantin Somov, Nikolas Kalmakoff, Alexander Bogomazov, and Dmitry Stelletsky.

Along with the 70 rarely displayed art pieces from private collections, the exhibition presents the surprising and often dramatic stories of the collectors Aram Abramyan, Valery Dudakov, Solomon Shuster, Nikolai Timofeev, Igor Sanovich, and Sigismund Valk.
