ROSIZO traces its history back to 1959, when the Ministry of Culture established a gallery to organize exhibitions of works from the collections of Russian museums, and also to distribute new works of art amongst them. Today, the gallery regularly exhibits the works of Russian artists, and also displays works which are either not part of the larger museum collections, or not accessible to the general public. ROSIZO maintains several venues in Moscow. The main venue is the historic mansion of the Turgenevy-Botkiny family in Kitay-Gorod, which is where the largest exhibitions take place. This mansion — which once welcomed the authors of well-known Russian classics — has been carefully restored, allowing visitors to not only view the artworks, but also the original decor of the early 19th century.
Lately, the gallery has been organizing exhibitions of contemporary Russian art, or retrospectives of Soviet artists — its reserves include thousands of unreleased works dating from the 1950s to the 1990s.
