Khlebozavod, or Bread Factory, is a shopping cluster and cultural campus occupying the compound of the former Bread Factory No. 9 on Novodmitrovskaya Street. The formerly abandoned industrial sprawl has been given a new lease on life. The former factory shops now house local brand boutiques, small showrooms, and the offices of major creative industry players. Khlebozavod is also a popular strolling destination for people from all parts of Moscow.
Most of the tenants are independent clothing labels. The choice is impressive. Places like SHU, Mech, Volchok, and a few others offer casual/street wear. Some corner shops specialize in formal business dress or outdoor gear. The designer garments on offer betray a penchant for genuinely original cuts. Apart from clothing, Khlebozavod is home to a large street art store, Graffitimarket, the popular chain opticians P.Y.E., and the comic book superstore Chook & Geek. Khlebozavod tenants often have garage sales in the summer, setting some of their merchandise outside, accompanied by live gigs and DJ sets. Then the place starts to resemble a fairground somewhere in Berlin more than a former Moscow factory compound.
