The theater company, created by famous puppet director Vladimir Shtein and painter Marina Gribanova in 1989, is staffed by professional actors who sing, dance, and do circus stunts in addition to puppeteering.

The repertoire includes some of the best children's books of all time. The adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's The Cat that Walked by Himself is recommended for children aged 5 or older, but the creators promise that older kids and adults will love it, too. The play Tales of Horton the Elephant, based on two books by celebrated American children's author Dr. Seuss -- Horton Hears a Who! and Horton Hatches the Egg -- is suitable for spectators of all ages up from age four.

The Magic Lamp offers Theatrical Classes in Literature - adaptations of literary works from the secondary school syllabus -- for school age children. Repertoire information about the Classes is available by dialing a phone number provided in the pertinent section of the website.

The Magic Lamp hosts writer talks, new children's book presentations, and exhibitions by eminent Russian book illustrators. The theater takes orders for kids' birthday parties featuring a play, a clown show, and a birthday cake.
